Did you know that the tallest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, is actually a volcano? Yes, it is a volcano, but it is not an active volcano. This volcano is covered in ice. When the ice/glaciers melt, they form a small river about the size of a school bus, that flows into the ocean.

There are many mountains covered in glaciers, such as the caterpillar and the taffy. These mountains are not only covered in glaciers but they were also formed by glaciers. A lot of mountains were formed by glaciers. Glaciers move from about 10 to 15 feet a year, but even though they move so slow, if you stand on one you can feel them moving.

Here are some fun facts about water/ice:

  • Water expands when it turns into ice
  • If ice is cold enough it can break iron
  • Most of the water on earth has turned into ice/ only 1/3 of the water on earth is fresh and the other 2/3 of the water is ice
  • People use a lake to store battery, electricity, and energy
  • Pools that were formed on Mount Everest, the layers of ice on top can break and cause catastrophic floods
